How to Develop a Growth Mindset | Labfresh

In every function people are acting very independently, and all of them have this hacker mentality and that's how you create an efficient organisation because then there's literally no excuses You don't need a big budget for that that

There can never be any excuses You cannot say that I don't have time or I don't have money for that You take those excuses away To me that was, just from the beginning, was clear for us We are never ever going to hire someone who does not have a growth hacking background My story actually involves two different startups

So I'm originally from Copenhagen and I moved to Amsterdam in 2013 to start a personal shopping service for men called the Cloakroom And we launched that, traditional startup style just from our apartment and it was pretty grimy and we were just learning as we went Within a couple of years it reached a certain size and we were able to sell it, and that's where we got the idea for Labfresh and that's about the period where we also started speaking a lot to the founders of Growth Tribe, which I found quite inspiring I met Peter, the founder of Growth Tribe at a startup weekend quite a few years ago and we were mentors together

And when we were walking around and talking to all these startups I very much noticed that his mindset was very different Because whatever these guys wanted to do he could get it down on a sort of micro level, and say, "oh, you don't need a big budget for that that" There can never be any excuses You cannot say that I don't have time or I don't have money for that

You take those excuses away I think it's also about how you define talent Talent for us is entirely about having the right mindset and being driven and having that mentality where you don't really quit You just keep on going until you solve whatever problem you run into Our first hire it was a Growth Tribe alumni who would just go straight into it and if she doesn't know how to do it she would Google her way and get it done

In every function people are acting very independently and all of them have this hacker mentality And that's how you create an efficient organisation, because then there's literally no excuses The way we see the most is whenever someone comments "Wow, Orssi, she's really fast Like wow, we're doing a lot of things at the same time Those comments keep coming over and over again, especially for new hires

And that's because if you actually spend the time on keeping your data in check and measuring everything you do, you can do so many new experiments at the same time You could have studied and have the best GPA and coming from the best school with the best master's degree You start in my office and I ask you to build a Facebook ad and you're like, "where do I start?" To me that was just from the beginning, clear for us: we are never ever going to hire someone who does not have a growth hacking background because we cannot teach you these things

You really have to Google away and learn it on your own There's a ripple effect in the growth team that hits the rest of the organisation When you get a growth hacker out in a huge company they end up sitting and testing tiny things that barely have a business impact and that's a waste of the growth hacker's time You twist it a little bit here and you twist a little bit there and then, you know, you optimise it but you kind of completely radically change your business model And growth hacking is, in its essence very radical

At least that's what we're trying to do If someone is testing it wants to test, you know, the colour of a button on our website, I would always get annoyed because there must be bigger things Try to find something bigger and then get back and show me that If you don't have any idea how growth hacking is working you also, kind of, expect to tell your team how it's done

As a founder, as a manager, even if you're not a marketing professional, it's your duty to know how to use your data Having this AI mentality as well and a growth hacking mindset, and not because you need to be able to build a Facebook ad yourself but you have to be able to be a leader for your team
